Training on radiation
in the Chernobyl Zone
Radiation reconnaissance route
The exclusive training will intellectually equip, practically train and psychologically empower you to successfully survive in contemporary contamination accidents, especially radiation ones, and/or study them, prevent and mitigate their consequences.
The training is based on a successful professional and personal experience of Chernobyl radiation reconnaissance men, combined with the most novel knowledge of many diverse sciences, relevant to the Chernobyl radiation accident and contemporary disasters. The content is delivered in an understandable language and, moreover, in an entertaining format – against the background of the most controversial patch of land on the globe, the so-called Chernobyl 'dead' zone. The route of the training follows the actual route of the Chernobyl radiation reconnaissance mission during the first months after the nuclear reactor's explosion, and weaves amidst impressive signs of the explosion and its subsequent mitigation, ruins and depopulated land with breathtakingly beautiful landscapes and flourishing wildlife.
The 1-day exclusive training will teach you to navigate among the contemporary contamination hazards – both extreme catastrophic and everyday 'normal' ones. It is designed both for professionals, students and the general public, who are concerned with the issues of radiation, contamination and health in connection with the environment we live in now.
The training employs the unique intellectual experiences of the Chernobyl radiation accident and possibilities of a present-day area with official name 'the Chernobyl exclusion/alienation zone' (Chernobylskaja zona otchuzhdenija). It generalizes and delivers in a nutshell a two-decade successful professional and personal experience of Chernobyl reconnaissance men, supported by a front-line complex multidisciplinary research of Chernobyl and contemporary disasters. All this is shaped in a user-friendly way by vast and invariably successful international lecturing expertise of the guide-instructor.
The guide-instructor Sergii Mirnyi (link) was commander of a radiation reconnaissance crew and platoon inside the Chernobyl zone several months after the explosion. He was an officer, responsible for management of the company's radiation reconnaissance missions, and was cited for bravery and heroism by the Commander of Kiev Military District. He has MSc in physical chemistry and MSc in environmental sciences and policy, complemented by the courses of social sciences and humanities (history and literature). He is an expert in Chernobyl and mitigation of radiation and ecological disasters, the author of а scientific monograph on the actual state of the Chernobyl mitigation workers' (liquidators') health and several important international papers on Chernobyl and regularities of contemporary disasters. He also wrote several books of Chernobyl prose and two screenplays, decorated at prestigious competitions.
All exclusive trainings on radiation in the Chernobyl Zone Radiation reconnaissance route usually have honorary guests – former Chernobyl radiation reconnaissance men, the Chernobyl survivors.
The training is conducted in English. Upon special request, done in advance, an English-Ukrainian/Russian translation can be provided.
During 1 day of the training YOU WILL:
- gain well checked practical survival skills - and those of research and mitigation of a contemporary contamination (and particularly radiation) accident
- measure radiation levels at carefully selected representative points outside and inside the Chernobyl zone
- see the most famous Chernobyl places: the Sarcophagus, which entombs the remains of the exploded reactor of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, the Chernobyl-town – the capital of the zone, the ghost town of Prypyat and several abandoned villages (one of them fully bulldozed), the exit decontamination depots, and the site of the military camp of the 25th brigade of radiation-chemical protection, which included a separate battalion of radiation reconnaissance
- acquire the skill of comprehension and correct interpretation of the maps of contamination (both radiation and chemical)
- learn the general pattern(s) of the contamination spatial distribution and its intricate, sometimes quite unexpected changes with time, caused by mitigation works and natural reasons
- be introduced to the universal holistic model of a contemporary single-point contamination accident/catastrophe as a phenomenon in natural and social environments
- learn a comprehensive set of the accident's/catastrophe's harmful factors and their relative importance in different ecological and social circumstances
- gain insight into a comprehensive set of the possible direct and indirect, psychologically and socially induced types of negative health impacts of the disasters
- learn to sensibly perceive the contemporary mass media messages about emergencies, accidents and catastrophes; protect yourselves from negative effects of the broadcasts and publications, and extract from them the information which is actually important for sustaining your health and well-being
- enjoy the amazingly fresh air, fascinating vistas and flourishing wildlife of the Chernobyl area – a likely future Chernobyl national park.
On the route from Kiev to the Chernobyl area you will see thematic documentaries and rare photos about the life and work of the Chernobyl 'liquidators', taken in 1986, shortly after the Chernobyl NPP’s unit explosion.
The group will travel aboard a comfortable bus with an air-conditioning.
The PARTICIPATION FEE of the training includes, in particular:
- an individual radiation dosimeter for the time of the training
- a complete set of protective gear (overalls (Tyvek Pro), respirator, gloves)
- tasty and ecologically pure dinner.
This training may be TAILORED to INDIVIDUAL OR SMALL GROUPS, and ONE OR SEVERAL ALL DAY TRAININGS, reflecting specific interests.

From the guide-instructor's answers
to the questions of prospective trainees
It will be a trip of a group of people, guided by me, who will make the measurements (of gamma- and, on few occasions, beta-radiation) themselves – at representative pre-selected points. In the course of this trip I will advise, consult and answer the questions of the trainees. They will gain their own experience and make their own conclusions. In the end we will have a one hour in-house de-briefing to generalize our findings and, by working in groups, to realize some crucially important aspects about spatial distribution of contamination and its reflection on the maps.
The interactive training intends to convey in just one day the basic, most essential technical, psychological and cultural information about radiation, which the Chernobyl radiation reconnaissance men have learned during several weeks or months of missions back in 1986. Until now those learnings were unavailable to the general public and professionals (who are, by and large, experts in just a single (or several) issues, relevant to radiation – and often do not see the more general picture). So, the training is both of professional interest (for experts) and personal interest (for everyone: it helps to separate fiction and the real hazards of today, and teaches how to cope with some of the real hazards). One may say that it includes a certain 'civil defense' prospective - but by no means is it limited to this prospective - and, moreover, goes far-far beyond it.
No special education is required for trainees ("it delivers ... in understandable language" – it's from the training 1-page synopsis).
I have no doubt that the top-quality first hand experience will help you to navigate the oceans of contradictory information about Chernobyl, radiation, contamination, ecology, accidents-disasters and health. And will help you to make the correct decisions in case of (God forbid!) real emergency in the future.
